Question: There are a lot of shops in the town which have gone out of buisness and are empty this makes darlington seem really ugly, could you do something to fill those spaces up?
this is a result of the recent recession, though we hope things are getting a bit better now. The council works with the town centre traders a great deal and we all want the same thing, a lively town to attract shoppers. this is partly why we put on events or encourage people to put on events in the town on High Row the market place and things like that. I know the Cornmill and Queen Street work well with us and sometimes have exhibitions in the empty shops of local artists or QESFC and Darlington College students’ work. We should do more of this – but ultimately, we hope more shops will open of course.
I would like to see the banks helping people set up businesses and opening shops in Darlington. But that is for the government . Where we as councillors can help is to allow planning permition to open a shop when people apply. I would like to see more shops in use.
I really think we should be pursuading more retaillers to come to Darlington, maybe by offering incentives and free parking for vistors more often as other town have all the shops and seem busy. I totally agree with you on this. I sometimes think that certain business open and you can predict early on that they won’t succeed by where they are, what they look like and their products.
Its such a shame that these shops are empty because there seems to be enough people shopping
in Darlington to attract people who want to spend money. There is a town centre business forum that works very
hard to try and make sure there are very few empty shops. The cornmill shopping centre and queen street are private companies. Most of the shops in the town are run by private companies. What the council has to do is to make Darlington an attractive and safe place to shop and I think that is what we have done.
