The Cabinet and officers put forward policy proposals for us to vote on, and we review and accept scrutiny reports. We also vote on proposed budgets (these meetings can be very lively) We also recognise special people. We had to pass the agreement to allow the Freedom of the Borough that happened last month.
Cabinet members put forward reports of what has happened in the preceding few weeks and other councillors can ask questions and sometimes disagree strongly with what they have done – so that stops it being boring! Also there are other reports from scrutiny committees. these are the committees which, as their name implies, scrutinise the work of the Cabinet. again, there is sometimes a bit of a row.! Also, there will be technical or legal reasons why certain subjects and policies have to be passed by the whole Council so these are presented, debated and voted on too. It’s usually over in about two to three hours. Why not try coming to sit in the gallery one time? The meetings are on a Thursday at 6.00 p.m, you can find the dates from the Town Hall or the newspapers.
I would like it to be less boring but it isnt! There is an Agenda to follow and we go through it until we reach the end. Sometimes a spark of debate can make the event more interesting but that is pretty rare. It seems to me like we are just doing the business.
Why not come along to a council meeting they’re open for members of the public to come along. To be honest the full council meetings are quite slow and boring – not what I expected the highlights are when Cllr Stenson stands up and shares his views – he tells it how it is!
