I’m not sure about this. Tha last government brought this in, and I seem to remember that Darlington decided to offer free swimming to over 60s instead of young people, (which i don’t suppose you would agree with) Now i think all the money has been withdrawn so you might find neighbouring towns won’t be able to offer free swimming for under 16s for much longer. But i don’t really know, so I’ll ask the people at the Dolphin Centre and write back to you.

This has took me a little time to investigate. This is a two year government initiative which offers free swimming to those
aged under 16 and over 60. It is only for those pools that are not Leisure Pools. The Dolphin centre pool is classed as a leisure pool and therefore does not qualify. so very sad.

Costs – it is too expensive the over 60’s now also have to pay. We need to pay off all these debts at the minute £150million a day is spent just paying interest on the government debts – try to live debt free

This was a decision made by the current ruling group in the council, which is the Labour group. They claim there is no money to subsidise the free swimming for young people.

I would love to see free swimming for the under 16’s in Darlington but this Government is forcing us to make some really difficult cuts. The other councils in our area are probably going to have to do the same soon.
