I think that litter is a big problem. The council does not drop litter they pick it up and people pay their council taxes
for people to pick it up. Those who do litter on purpose should pay a fine and if you see an area that needs a big clean either tell your councillor to report it or ring 380651 and tell the council. If you see litter pick it up just because it isnt yours doesnt mean that you should walk past it. Only safe litter though the rest should be reported.

I hate litter but some people are really lazy and not very thoughtful when dropping litter. More fines might work? Also maybe making the retailler responsible for their packaging like McDonalds do might make them think more carefully – what do you think?

In the ward I am councillor it is a big problem. There was a cycle track made in North Park and litter was always found around it. We got a bin put right next to the track. It improved a bit but some people still just dropped their litter. Thats young people but some adults also leave litter around the ward. Apart from having eyes everywhere watching and then telling the people who litter not to, the main way to stop it ,is to fine peopel for littering. It is a shame we have to do this.

I really hate litter, it’s something that is totally wrong but it costs the council millions of pounds to deal with. We have hundreds of public litter bins around the town so why don’t people use them? I think that the council is doing a good job to prosecute people that drop litter but in some cases it is parents and even grandparents who are at fault!

I sometimes despair about litter! We teach children not to drop it, we spend a fortune on clearing it up and still people are dropping litter. I don’t really know what else we can do. We could try – all of us – to tap people on the shoulder and asking them politely to pick up what they’ve dropped – but be careful who you try it with!!

Thank you for your replys, I think it is a good idea for them to get fined for littering, as it makes them think twice about dropping litter. McDonalds does have quite excessive packaging, which could be minimized somehow, retailers should be made to keep the outside area clean and tidy!

McDonalds are quite good at keeping there shop fronts really well maintained rather than causing more litter. I also agree that all retaillers should be responsible for outside there shop fronts for pride and cleanliness.

All shops are responsible for the land directly outside their premisis so if they don’t provide a bin and try and keep it clean they can be fined, that goes for McDonallds too.
